Cairn

Most of the trails in Acadia were well-marked by cairns like this. Rachel had a theory that whoever was doing this was probably a little OCD, since they were all over the place and pretty weird. I guess they are more useful than blazes for winter hiking, but I found it amusing that there were signs everywhere warning people not to create new cairns. Here you can see that someone decided to "top off" this cairn with a charcoal briquette.

(On a completely different note, on a later boating expedition the captain of the boat had a cairn terrier, Rachel's favorite breed.)
